The Spring Hot Dog Invitational Results, Part 3

Here is where memory fails me. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the place we went to (also in Union) for Italian hot dogs. I think I repressed it, actually, so grossed out was I by these monsters. As you can see, they’re something else. I don’t know who came up with the idea to stuff a quarter of a ciabatta with hot dogs, griddled peppers and onions, and about a pound of fried potato slices, but he or she was a real sicko. The fact that the only other customers aside from us were morbidly obese did nothing to alter my judgment. Though I felt bad for wasting food, most of mine ended up in the bin.

and I thought I invented Italian Hot Dogs! Growing up in NJ, as you very well know, my dad used to take me to Rut’s Hut, his childhood fave, but also to a place in West Orange that had Italian style Hot Dogs. Being the 80s and being budget perhaps, they were served in pitas if I remember correctly. And I always asked for no onions or peppers, because you know, I was picky. But hot dogs and fried potatoes were enough for me.

I said the first line there because since then whenever I’d mention “italian style hot dogs” people looked at me like a freak.

Mmm… I love me some Rutt’s Hut. Sadly, it was disqualified from competition on the grounds that we’d all been there like 50 times previously.

After the IHD stop in Union, we drove to Elizabeth in attempt to eat yet more dogs, but we just couldn’t do it. We walked around downtown Elizabeth instead, which is… atmospheric. Or something. It was kind of hot that day, and I swear to god no male under the age of 60 was wearing a shirt.
